What is a good score on MATHCOUNTS State? ›

MATHCOUNTS Competition Series scores do not conform to traditional grading scales. Coaches and students should view an Individual Score of 23 (out of a possible 46) as highly commendable.

Target Round

Students have 6 minutes to complete each set of two problems. Students may not go back to previous rounds (or forwards to future rounds) even if they finish before time is called. Calculators are allowed for the Target Round. Usually comprised of one "confidence booster" and one hard problem.

The AMC 8 is the hardest of the three math competitions on this list. Many consider Math Olympiad and Mathcounts to be good preparation for the AMC 8. This 40-minute competition is for middle schoolers in the 8th grade or below who are under 14.5 years old on competition day.

How can I improve my MATHCOUNTS score? ›

Practicing problems from every MATHCOUNTS topic will help ensure that no question is too difficult to solve. For example, if you missed a question from your practice session because you did not understand the concept. Make a note of it and take it upon yourself to learn how to solve that specific problem.

The top 5 students from each chapter and the 10 next highest scores in the state advance to the State Competition. Schools register in the fall and work with students during the year. Students have the opportunity to take 4 online practice competitions beginning in October.

The nine top-achieving national competitors will receive college scholarships, totaling $44,000 across all recipients. The National Champion (Countdown Round Winner) will win the $20,000 Donald G. Weinert Scholarship. The Countdown Round Runner-Up will receive $7,500.
