Just when I thought that the long lived Scandinavian interior design theme is phasing out, the world decided to prolong it’s live a little longer by coming up with a fusion concept called, ‘Japandi.’
Suffice to say, the interior design world has seen a number of styles come and go over the years, but one that has been gaining popularity in recent years is this lethal combo of east meets west, Japanese Zen fused with Scandinavian vibes, known as the Japandi style. This style is has been embraced by homeowners and designers alike. Let’s explore the rise of Japandi style in interior design and discuss why it has become so popular.

So we know that Japandi is a fusion style like your Miso flavoured Aglio Spaghetti, at first glance, seem very different from each other. Scandinavian design is known for its minimalist and functional approach, while Japanese design is often associated with intricate details and natural materials. However, both styles share a love for simplicity, clean lines, and a focus on natural materials. The fusion of these two styles creates a unique aesthetic that is both calming and inviting.

Another reason for the rise of Japandi style is that it is highly adaptable to a variety of spaces and lifestyles. Whether you live in a small apartment or a large house, Japandi style can be incorporated into your home. The neutral color palette and minimalist approach to design make it easy to integrate Japandi elements into any space. You feel very serene and calm due to its colour palette, and this is especially important, in hot tropical Singapore. Additionally, Japandi style is not limited to a specific age group or demographic, making it very accessible option even for my 70 year old mother, who is in love with this style!
4. THEN HOW TO GO ABOUT CREATING THIS LOOK?
One of the key features of Japandi style is the use of natural materials. Both Scandinavian and Japanese design place a strong emphasis on using natural materials such as wood, stone, and bamboo. These materials not only add warmth and texture to a space but also create a connection to nature. It is always ideal to incorporate natural materials into our homes can provide a sense of earthly grounding (pun intended).

When it comes to color, Japandi style typically uses a neutral palette of whites, grays, and blacks, with occasional pops of muted colors such as sage green or blush pink. In my opinion and findings, Japandi style has become popular in interior design due to its calming aesthetic, adaptability, and emphasis on natural materials, neutral colors, and minimalism. This fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design elements allows for a unique and timeless look that can be incorporated into any space or lifestyle. Japandi style promotes mindfulness and intentionality in design, creating a sense of serenity in our homes. As long as my Mama is happy, I am happy!
