• Defend is Uqora’s second product, and it uses black pepper powder, d-mannose, green tea leaf extract, turmeric root extract and vitamin D3 in an effort to cleanse biofilm (microorganisms that bind together and attach to surfaces) and keep the bladder wall clean. Its serving size is two capsules taken with water daily. It’s worth noting that while there is some evidence to back up the efficacy of d-mannose and vitamin D3 when it comes to keeping the urinary tract healthy, the same can’t be said for turmeric root extract, green tea leaf or black pepper powder.
• Promoteis a vagin*l probiotic that contains the bacteriasLactobacillus Acidophilus,Lactobacillus RhamnosusandLactobacillus Reuteri, all of which live naturally in the vagin*. Promote, which is taken orally with water once a day, works to promote a healthy vagin*l microbiome, which can help keep the urinary tract healthy.

The main ingredient used in Uqora’s Flush and Defend Products, d-mannose, a kind of sugar that already naturally occurs in the human body, has promising scientific evidence when it comes to preventing and reducing the frequency of UTIs, according to Fenwa Milhouse, M.D., a Chicago-based board-certified urologist and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery specialist. “However, the evidence thus far is from a small number of studies with relatively small sample sizes,” she says. “This means that more substantial scientific data is needed to validate these results.”

However, she says, there appears to be little harm to using d-mannose, so other than cost, there’s probably not much of a downside to trying it. “D-mannose is a naturally occurring sugar that can bind to the bacteria so they can’t bind to the bladder wall,” she explains. “I do have countless patients who swear by Uqora, so I tend to recommend it for my patients with recurrent UTIs,” says Dr. Milhouse

Dr. Milhouse cautions people to remember that these products are not intended to treat UTIs. “There is no scientific evidence that shows these products can treat a developing UTI, so I don’t recommend these products for this purpose,” she says. “If you are developing a UTI, I recommend increased water intake to help flush your urine out and getting a urine culture with your doctor or provider, at minimum.” From there, your doctor may prescribe a round of antibiotics.

According to reviews on the Uqora website, which are unfiltered according to the company, generally customers are happy with the results of Uqora’s products. “I was experiencing UTIs regularly after intercourse. It took three months of being on the complete Uqora regimen, but since then I have not experienced one UTI and I am finally free from taking prescription antibiotics,” one reviewer wrote.

Most complaints on the company website are related to difficulty canceling a subscription, but a few customers say Uqora’s products simply didn’t work for them, or not as well as they hoped they would. “I was really excited to find out about Uqora,” a reviewer wrote. “I’ve been following the complete regimen for six months and got a UTI. Will be trying something else instead.”
