Tile School: White Grout and Tile Floors (2024)

Working on a tile floor? From the type of grout that is best for the job to the grout color that will best suit your space, it's important to consider the choices you have when it comes to the glue that holds your tile together. Today we're tackling the question: "Is white grout on the floor a do or a don't?"

The answer is that of course it can be a "do", but we'll go over best practices below. Have more grout related questions? Head to this blog.

Sanded Vs. Epoxy Grout

What is important to know is that white grout will show dirt more, therefore you'll have to spend more time cleaning it. If you're set on white grout, you might consider using Epoxy Grout, which is stain-resistant. If you choose to go with Epoxy, make sure you work with an installer that is comfortable with the product, as it does set much more quickly than sanded grout.

Our founder Paul Burns, opted for white tile floors and white grout when he bought his new home. To avoid the hassle of cleaning, he went the Epoxy grout route:

Cleaning White Grout

White grout can be sealed when installed and re-sealed periodically. There are also products on the market to better maintain your white grout, along with standard bleach (if you don't mind using it).

To clean grout with common household products, make a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and scrub the paste into the grout with a firm brush before rinsing and with water and wiping it dry.

Alternatives to White Grout

If you don't want to work with epoxy grout and don't want excess cleaning duties, you can always opt for a slightly contrasting shade of grout. A barely there gray or a warm neutral will not show as much wear and tear as a bright white. You could consider something like the neutral grout below.

A lot of people likely choose a bright white grout in order to highlight the pattern of their tile floor, but you can get the same wow factor using other contrasting colors as well. We love the terra cotta-colored grout that Justina Blakeney chose for her Star and Cross tile floor.
