Abstract
This chapter examines the participation of Highland Scots in warfare in the British Atlantic World between the War of the Austrian Succession and the Napoleonic War. Using Gaelic songs created by and about soldiers, the chapter challenges the assumption that Highland connections with the Atlantic World were overwhelmingly positive and fixated solely upon emigration. In examining songs about war and empire, the chapter demonstrates how and why the Atlantic World was an arena of violence as well as an arena of opportunity for Highland Scots. Examining the production and use of Gaelic military songs, the chapter expands the scope for understanding the place of the Atlantic World in the Highland experience.
