Despite being released over two months ago, The In Between is one of the most watched films on Netflix UK right now. Starring Joey King and Kyle Allen as Tessa and Skylar, the film follows a young couple whose relationship is tragically cut short when he is killed in a car accident.
Following his death, Tessa is left trying to connect with the afterworld, in an attempt to give their relationship the ending it deserves. Fans have described the film as heart-breaking and emotional, while others have been looking for an in-depth explainer of how The In Between ends.
The In Between ending, explained
The film is told in two simultaneous timelines, looking at both Tessa's background and her present day, so you'd be forgiven for finding it a bit confusing. Viewers learn about her complicated upbringing, after her mother abandoned her and she was adopted by Mel. We also learn how she and Skylar met - at a rowing meet, though he also had sought her out on the internet - and her interest in photography.
In the present day, Tessa survives the car crash which her boyfriend Skylar is killed in, though she has to have surgery for a ruptured heart. She wakes up in a hospital bed and starts having strange experiences, like hearing Skylar's voice. Fellow patient Doris, who has an interest in the afterlife, tells Tessa it could be Skylar attempting to reach her.
While she doesn't believe Doris initially, weird phenomenas keep happening to Tessa. It's only when she starts seeing his face in strange places and 'their song' starts playing out in an exam hall that she believes he's trying to communicate.
From here, her car sat-nav leads her back to Doris's house, where she tells Tessa that Skylar wants to meet her in the places where they both felt the most in love, which will allow her to move between the worlds of life and death with him. Tessa begins visiting these places in the hope of finding Skylar, but suffers a setback: her heart stitches rupture and she needs another surgery.
In her hospital room, Tessa asks BFF Shannon to drive her to the final destination on Doris's list: the place where their car crashed. On the way, Tessa collapses, before having an out-of-body experience where she meets Skylar's ghost. They relive the moment of the crash, and Tessa is able to tell him she loved him, before their ghosts go on a journey through their memories together, and creating new ones with a trip to Paris.
Eventually, Tessa chooses to live in the real world, bidding Skylar goodbye and waking up in her hospital bed. We later see her giving a photography presentation in a bid to get into a prestigious art school, with Skylar's ghost watching on.
