Pattern Trends for 2024 - Design Pool (2024)

When researching 2024 pattern trends, a common thread ran through everyone’s predictions: personalized style. Sure, there were other styles and motifs mentioned, which we’ll discuss, but the overarching theme was: Whatever you like, that’s what’s in. It seems like a lot of people are growing bored with the social-media-ready rooms that fit neatly into a 9:16 sized frame. They all look the same, and there is pressure to keep buying and keep posting. In residential spaces, people are itching to express their individuality. They want to show the world what they love through their own particular lens. One way people are doing this is through pattern.

Pattern is uniquely suited to express ourselves.

Pattern adds a lot of personality to a space. Just as it did in fashion, quiet luxury is taking hold in interiors. Jake Arnold described this trend to Vogue as an “emphasis on classic, investment pieces that you can build a room around.” With this as a base, people are free to make a space their own with what they love and have collected throughout their lives.

So, people love pattern. What particular types of patterns are trending?

Bold Basics

Stripes, plaids, and dots are all trending in printed and woven materials. With these classic patterns, there are often surprises with scale or color to add visual impact. These types of classics also work well with many other kinds of patterns. For those who love a more maximalist feel, pairing fun and busy patterns with a bold basic helps tie a room together.

Vintage-Inspired Patterns

Historical patterns and heritage revival prints such as toiles are trending, particularly in residential interiors. Yet, rather than design a room to be thematically correct, designers are mixing and matching historical periods. Again, it’s about what speaks to the people occupying a space. If it’s what they love, different styles will hang together.

Graphic Florals
Similar to how designers use bold and large-scale stripes, plaids, and dots, they’re using graphic florals. These florals are often used at large scale for maximum impact. With murals also a trend for 2024, these florals make beautiful murals or accent walls.

What 2024 interior trends does pattern fit into?

Maximalism

After years of sleek minimalism, many designers are embracing a maximalist aesthetic, and pattern fits perfectly into this trend. True lovers of maximalism love to layer patterns on top of each other or put surprising patterns together in one space.

Romance

“Romanticism is having a moment,” says Architectural Digest. This style tends to feel nostalgic, tapping into feelings of love and life’s simple moments. Bold, graphic florals fit this trend perfectly, especially when paired with rich texture or smart basics.

Quiet Luxury

Designers embracing quiet luxury create spaces with high-quality, traditional pieces that serve as the base of a room. With this solid base, rooms can be updated periodically with other elements. Updating accessories or reupholstering furniture with patterns and colors that are timely can refresh a room while staying true to a client’s personal style in residential spaces or a company’s branding in commercial ones.

What does this mean for commercial interiors?

As far as pattern trends go in commercial interiors, there are a lot of dramatic, large-scale geometric patterns. Work Design Magazine recently said, “These striking designs help business create a true design statement that expresses personality and makes a lasting impression on visitors.” Businesses can also show their personality by mixing patterns in surprising combinations.

Digital printing has made it possible for interior designers to add pattern to a wide range of materials that previously would have been plain. Ceiling tiles, light lenses, wood, metal, leather, all these materials (and more) can be printed with pattern. The possibilities are endless for adding that pop of pattern to make a space more on-brand, more unique, and more visually stimulating.
