Kitchen cabinet painting. Everyone is talking about it. Is it a fad? Is it the right choice for my kitchen? Will it decrease or increase the value of my home? Let’s break down those questions.

Question: Is kitchen cabinet painting a fad?

Answer: No. Kitchen cabinets have been painted for over 100 years. What could possibly put you in the “fad” category would be painting your cabinets a “fad” color. White kitchens are timeless. Kristie Barnett, The Decorologist offers her opinion on Why White Kitchen Cabinets are the right choice.

White cabinetry is timeless and works for all kinds of styles – country, european, contemporary, modern.- Kristie Barnett- The Decorologist

White kitchen cabinets can work in just about every home. If your home has brown countertops, cream painted cabinets might be a better choice like this kitchen we completed recently.

Gray is a very hot kitchen cabinet colorright now. Gray cabinets should have a life-span of about 10-15 years if done correctly. Paired with white marble countertops and white subway tiles, this style will be timeless and fresh for decades to come.

Here is the same look in cream cabinets and light granite. Timeless, right?

According to Color Expert, Maria Killam Gray paint will always be on trend when paired with happy colors. Here is what she says is dated:

Some think brown is still that trendy neutral. If a consumer has been coveting the look of rich brown cabinets and she finally has the money to renovate but doesn’trealize brown is out, shewill still install a brown kitchen without knowing that it will instantly look over 10 years old, and really, probably closer to 15. – Maria Killam

Question: Is kitchen cabinet painting the right choice for my kitchen?

Answer: Painting your kitchen cabinets is the right choice for your kitchen if:

  • You like the style of your cabinet doors
  • You like the layout of your kitchen
  • You want to update your kitchen as economically as possible
  • You care about the environment and want to keep the waste out of the landfills

Question: Will painting my kitchen cabinets increase or decrease the value of my home?

Answer: That depends on how you do it. In my opinion, a beautiful professionally applied painted finish will greatly increase the value of your home. Homebuyers want a smooth professional painted surface that will last for years to come. Most homeowners we work with are making other changes at the same time like updating to granite, marble or quartz countertops, installing a new backsplash, changing out lighting, flooring, or appliances. All of these changes together add up to a completely updated kitchen that will add huge value.

Clients who DIY their kitchen cabinets or use a company that does not specialize in painted cabinetry can be looking at a possible decrease in value. We are often contacted by homeowners who have painted cabinets where the finish is failing. If the surface is not properly prepped, if the paint job is sloppy, if the cabinets are waxed or heavily distressed, these can all potentially lead to a decrease in the value of your kitchen makeover.

The bottom line: Kitchen cabinet painting is not a fad, but an upgrade when executed in the right color palette by a professional company. Want to see a recent project before/after video and hear what that client had to say about working with us? Check this out!

Hi again Dana I have to say that once again I think you nailed it with this post. Painting cabinets has been around as long as I have been in the business and that’s a long time 🙂 For nearly forty year I surely would not call that a “Fad” as you have said. Color on the other hand changes from time to time however that goes hand in hand with the up keep in the maintenance as you well know.
However as you said there is a right way and a wrong way to do it and as long as its the right way then of course the value of the home is at a continuum level.
Of course upgrades and changes always increases the equity just depends on what those changes are. Anyway, I just thought I would hop over and show some support and tell you how much I liked this latest post……Peace
