What You’ll Need
Your supply list is pretty simple:
– Tape measure
– Paper or notebook
– Pencil
– Calculator
Measuring Areas for Tile
When measuring your kitchen area for a tile backsplash, you’ll want to think about it in areas of width and height. Some kitchens are one long rectangle – very easy to measure the width and height for the area! Most kitchens, however, have elements such as windows and cabinets that break up the area into smaller sections. It is important to take into account every area that will need to be tiled!
Step 1:
Measure the width and height of every area, labeling each area with a capital letter.
Step 2:
Multiply the width and height to find the total area in inches, then divide by 144 to find the amount of square feet needed (amount of inches in a square foot).
For example, if your space is 48″ (width) x 18″ (height) = 864. 864/144 = 6 square feet.
Be sure to measure every area that needs tile and add them together!
Here are some common kitchen types that show different kinds of areas to measure!
Below are some examples of different kitchen backsplashes we have done so you can get an idea! Is there one that looks similar to your kitchen? This can help you visualize the final product!
Account for Overage
Because of the unique quality of handmade tile, we suggest every project to include 10% of overage for tile. However, if you are ordering Moroccan Fish ScaleTile, we suggest 20% overage for best results!

Thanks for this advice for measuring a kitchen backsplash. You mentioned that you should try to measure the width and height of every area. It also sounds important to double check your measurements if it can affect how big the backsplash will be. https://www.belktile.com/glass-tile-backsplash/
