A Potion of Leaping in Minecraft is a consumable item that gives players the Jump Boost status effect. Jump Boost enables you to jump higher, adding 50% to the normal jumping height and reducing fall damage by half a heart.

Jump Boost has levels I, II, III, and more, with each level increasing the height you can jump by 50%. However, Potions of Leaping only apply I and II. Jump Boost I increases the height to half a block, while Jump Boost II increases it to an entire block.

Reasons why players may want the Jump Boost effect are to jump over obstacles easier, explore challenging terrain faster, and avoid hostile mobs and dangerous areas more efficiently. A downside to this is the higher you jump, the bigger the fall damage. While the Potion of Leaping reduces fall damage by half a heart to a full heart depending on the status effect level, it does not negate it so you can still get damaged if you fall from somewhere high enough.

🛈 If you jump at level 33 Jump Boost, you can die once you land on the ground.

If you want to negate fall damage instead, you can visit this guide on how to make a Potion of Slow Falling:

It’s entirely possible to use this alongside other potions and status effects, so having a Potion of Leaping on hand is still a good idea especially if you find yourself in a tricky situation. However, be warned that the Jump Boost effect does not work on Shulkers, Withers, and the Ender Dragon.

Don’t worry if you don’t have these on hand yet! We’ll walk you through how to get them below:

1 – Make a Water Bottle

First, you need 3 Glass Blocks to make 3 Glass Bottles using a Crafting Table. You only need 1 Glass Bottle to make 1 Potion of Leaping, but you can use up to 3. For this example, however, we’ll only use one.

Now, with your Glass Bottle in hand, interact with a water source to turn it into a Water Bottle.

2 – Obtain Rabbit’s Foot

Rabbits have a chance of dropping Rabbit’s Foot when killed. You can typically find rabbits in biomes with grass, sand, or snow blocks.

Another option is to get them from tamed cats as gifts. Occasionally, you may also find foxes with rabbit’s foots in their mouths, which they will drop when killed or distracted by dropped food items.

3 – Gather Nether Wart and Blaze Rods

Look for Nether Fortresses. Here, you can usually find Nether Wart growing on Soul Sand. Blazes are also likely to spawn nearby, so get Blaze Rods by killing them to save you another trip back. You can later turn these into Blaze Powder using a Crafting Table.

4 – Brew an Awkward Potion

After gathering the ingredients, prepare your Brewing Stand by putting Blaze Powder in the fuel slot. Then, put the Nether Wart in the base ingredient slot and 1-3 Water Bottles in any of the potion slots.

When it’s done brewing, you’ll have an Awkward Potion.

5 – Brew a Potion of Leaping

With the Awkward Potion in the Brewing Stand, put a Rabbit’s Foot in the base ingredient slot and wait for the brewing to complete again.

Afterwards, you’ll get a Potion of Leaping! This recipe gives you a regular Potion of Leaping (03:00) that lasts for 3 minutes and gives you the Jump Boost status effect when consumed.

How to Use a Potion of Leaping

The only way to use a Potion of Leaping is to consume it. In-game, you can do this by equipping the Potion and simply interacting with it. Controls vary depending on your Minecraft version.

For the Java and Education Editions, you drink the potion by right-clicking and waiting until the drinking animation is complete or until you are left with an empty Glass Bottle.

Bedrock Edition uses the following controls:

  • Keyboard & Mouse: Right-click and hold.
  • Controller: Press the LT/L2/ZL button and hold.
  • Mobile: Tap the screen and hold.

Drinking the potion in any version returns an empty Glass Bottle. You will then notice yellow particle effects on your screen to indicate that you have the Jump Boost status effect. You can find more details such as the name and duration of the effect in your inventory menu.

Splash Potion of Leaping: Jump Boost (03:00/02:15)

Brew a Splash Potion of Leaping by adding Gunpowder to a regular Potion of Leaping (03:00). If you throw this Splash Potion at another player or mob, they will get a Jump Boost for 3 minutes in the Java Edition, or 2 minutes and 15 seconds in the Bedrock Edition.

🛈 Get Gunpowder by looting chests and killing Creepers, Ghasts, or Witches. Wandering Traders also have a chance of selling it.

Splash Potion of Leaping (08:00/06:00)

If you want a Splash Potion of Leaping to last longer, add Redstone Dust to a Splash Potion of Leaping (03:00/02:15). This extends the duration to 8 minutes in the Java Edition or 6 minutes in the Bedrock Edition.

🛈 Another method to get an extended Splash Potion of Leaping is to add Gunpowder to an extended Potion of Leaping (08:00).

Splash Potion of Leaping (01:30) with Jump Boost II

To get a Splash Potion of Leaping that applies Jump Boost II, add Glowstone Dust to a regular Splash Potion of Leaping (03:00/02:15). This variant lasts 1 minute and 30 seconds.

How to Make a Lingering Potion of Leaping

To make Lingering Potion of Leaping and its other variants, follow the steps below:

Lingering Potion of Leaping: Jump Boost (00:45)

To brew a Lingering Potion of Leaping, add Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion of Leaping (03:00). Throw this potion at a block or area to create a cloud that gives players and mobs passing through the Jump Boost effect for 45 seconds.

🛈 To get Dragon’s Breath, use a Glass Bottle on the Ender Dragon’s breath attack or the purple particles left behind.

Lingering Potion of Leaping (02:00)

To extend the Lingering Potion of Leaping, add Redstone Dust to a Lingering Potion of Leaping (00:45). This returns a Lingering Potion of Leaping that lasts for 2 minutes.

🛈 You can also get an extended Lingering Potion of Leaping by adding Dragon’s Breath to an extended Splash Potion of Leaping (08:00).

Lingering Potion of Leaping (00:22) with Jump Boost II

To get a Lingering Potion of Leaping that grants Jump Boost II and lasts for 22 seconds, add Glowstone Dust to a Lingering Potion of Leaping (00:45).

How to Make an Arrow of Leaping Using a Lingering Potion of Leaping

Make Arrows of Leaping by putting Lingering Potion of Leaping and 8 Arrows in a Crafting Table. Here’s how you can make the different variants:

Arrow of Leaping (00:22)

Craft 8 Arrows of Leaping by combining a Lingering Potion of Leaping (00:45) with 8 Arrows. Hitting a player or mob who with an Arrow of Leaping will give them the Jump Boost effect for 22 seconds.

Arrow of Leaping (01:00)

To get an Arrow of Leaping that lasts longer, use an extended Lingering Potion of Leaping (02:00) with 8 Arrows instead. The arrows will then last for 1 minute.

Arrow of Leaping (00:11) with Jump Boost II

Arrows of Leaping can also have Jump Boost II. To craft them, put 8 Arrows and a Lingering Potion of Leaping (00:22) with Jump Boost II in a Crafting Table.

Where to Find a Potion of Leaping in Creative Mode

If you have cheats turned on, you can opt to use console commands instead. Then, enter this in the chat window:

/give @p potion{Potion:”minecraft:leaping”} 1

  • give: This is the main command.
  • @p: This indicates the nearest player. In most cases, this is you. You can also replace this with your username.
  • potion{Potion:“minecraft:leaping”): This identifies what item you want to give the entity. In this case, the item is a Potion of Leaping.
  • 1: This is the amount of the above item that you want to have.

The syntax above only works in the Java Edition. If you have Bedrock Edition, use the following syntax:

/give @p potion 1 9

If you want to learn more about the /give command, the Minecraft Wiki discusses other syntaxes you can try.

What Are Alternatives to Using a Potion of Leaping

If you want other ways to get a Jump Boost or alternatives to said status effect, you can use the following options:

  • Use an Elytra. Despite being difficult to acquire, Elytras are a good alternative for the Jump Boost effect, allowing you to fly, reach great heights, and avoid fall damage at the same time.
  • Brew other potions. If your goal is just to jump without getting fall damage, use a Potion of Slow Falling. You can also opt for a Potion of Swiftness if you want to navigate difficult terrain faster. Doing this does not give you a Jump Boost, but it does increase the speed of other movements such as walking and sprinting.
