Is a 36 door actually 36? ›

For example, a nominal door size of 36 inches would fit into a rough opening 36 inches wide. The actual size of the door slab may be slightly smaller than the nominal size, typically by about 3/4 inch on each side, allowing for clearance around the door to ensure it can open and close smoothly.

In conclusion, a 30-inch door is precisely 30 inches wide in terms of the door slab. However, when installing it, you will need to consider the framed opening, clearance requirements, swing, and other factors to ensure that the door fits snugly and operates correctly.

Measure from one side to the other of the door panel, or the part that swings. To find the door height, measure from the top of the door panel to the bottom on the edge of the door. Measure the door thickness and door jamb width. For the door thickness, simply measure the edge of the door.

Standard Size for Interior Doors

The height for all passage doors must be a minimum of 80 inches and the standard width sizes for interior doors are 24”, 28”, 30”, 32” and 36”. The minimum recommended door width to allow persons with disabilities' to pass through is 36 inches.

The Standard Front Door Size

Newer homes, including new construction, may have entry doors as narrow as 30 inches (2 ½ feet) or as tall as 96 inches (8 feet). These measurements are just for the door itself, not including the frame. The door frame typically adds ¾ inch to the opening you'll need for your door.

The most common interior door width found in a bedroom is 30 inches.

A 36” x 80” pre-hung single door will use a rough opening of approximately 38-1/2” x 82-1/4” to fit. Always remember to square up your door before you nail the frame in place to assure it will close properly.

A common rule of thumb is to add about 2 inches to the width and 2 1/2 inches to the height of the actual door size to determine the rough opening size. So, for a 30-inch door: The rough opening width would be approximately 32 inches. The rough opening height would be approximately 82 1/2 inches.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) states that doors should be a minimum of 36 inches wide. While residential doors generally don't need to comply with this standard, some do anyway — especially newer homes built with older adults and individuals with mobility concerns in mind.

Take three measurements inside the door frame – at the top, middle and bottom. The widest measurement determines the width of the door. Use a tape measure to understand the width of the three areas of the door frame.

How much smaller should a door be than the frame? ›

There should be a 2mm or 3mm gap between the door and the frame on both sides and the top. If you do need to cut the door down to size, keep in mind that you need to cut all four sides of the door equally whenever possible to retain an accurate shape or pattern if the door is panelled.
