The following contains spoilers from the Boruto manga. Anime-only viewers please be advised.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is the nearly decade-old sequel to Masashi Kishimoto's original Naruto series, advancing the story with Boruto Uzumaki, Naruto's son as the protagonist. While the shared setting between the two works has become modernized, it still carries the Naruto series' unique ninja-centric design philosophy for everything it introduces.
This means engaging in combat is as dangerous as ever for almost any character, proven through Boruto's battles alongside friends against some of the mightiest villains fans have seen yet. As such, many major characters, like Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, lost their lives amid the conflicts in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations so far. While some of these major characters have revived since their deaths, the deaths are still noteworthy events that bear reflection.
Updated by Jeremy Devoe on June 12, 2024:As it has been some time since this article was initially written, we wanted to update the list to include the deaths of two more major characters who have died and provide additional context to the incidents of character death already discussed. We also added tables under each entry to provide supplementary information about the character at the center of each entry.

The popular Naruto and Boruto manga had many horrific deaths that were violent, impactful and proved that these stories aren't really for kids.
Kinshiki was the guardian of Momoshiki Otsutsuki and came to earth with him in the very first story arc of Boruto. Before perishing from his injuries at the hands of Sasuke, Chōjūrō and Kurotsuchi, Kinshiki is transformed into a Chakra Fruit to be consumed by Momoshiki. He willingly accepts the process on account of the Otsutsuki Clan's laws. Even being a lesser member of the Otsutsuki Clan, Kinishki was quite powerful, to the point of being able to hold his own against Sasuke Uchiha for quite some time.
The pills made from the Chakra Edibles created by Momoshiki are specifically referred to as the "Cinnebar Elixir/Panacea," which makes further reference to the theme of the mythological Moon Rabbit that the Otsutsuki Clan is often associated with. Given the nature of the effects of the Chakra Edible Creation technique, it is unlikely that Kinshiki will be seen again.

Momoshiki was the first major antagonist of the Boruto series. After arriving on earth in search of the Nine-Tails' chakra, Momoshiki eventually kidnaps its jinchuriki, Naruto Uzumaki. The resulting battle to save Nauro leads to Momoshiki dying at the end of an Oyako Rasengan, jointly created by Boruto and Naruto. However, given the immense power Momoshiki possessed, his spirit remained intact after his body was destroyed. This allowed Momoshiki to place his Karma upon Boruto, marking the protagonist as his vessel.
Momoshiki's influence on Boruto and the plot has continued to persist well beyond his death, including multiple possessions of Boruto's body through the Karma placed on it. Momoshiki other appearances typically involve being in Boruto's ear, assuring the ninja that he will become permanently possessed in due time, the threat of his reappearance hangs over Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

Deepa was a notably powerful member of Kara who stood in the way of Boruto Uzumaki and his team and forced them to grow stronger. After making quick work of Boruto's team initially, Deepa was left heavily wounded during their second meeting while the Kara member was distracted by his fury over the recreated God Tree's collapse. While this God Tree's collapse also crushes most of Deepa's body, Deepa's head manages to remain intact for retrieval by Victor.
Deepa's head was relocated to the Kara organization's hideout, with Deepa's brain restored by Amado on Jigen's Orders. After Jigen got the truth from Deepa about what happened in the Land of Valleys, Jigen ordered Amado to dispose of Deepa's head, which was done by completely dissolving it. His true end came after his defeat at the hands of Boruto and his team while saving Boruto from being crushed by Koji's Sage Toad Summoning, which Ao was too injured to move out of the way of.
Ao was laid to rest by Konohamaru, but not to forgive the former's killing of Mugino, instead to honor the fact that his last action before death was to save another shinobi. His nature as an Outer of Kara and Koji's appearance to clean things up gave the Hidden Leaf Village an idea of what they were facing concerning Kara.

10 Best Boruto Villains, Ranked
Boruto continues on Naruto's legacy of introducing epic villains, with characters like Code, Shin and Isshiki being terrifying forces of evil.
An Inner member of Kara, Boro rose to the status of a major antagonist after Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha initially lost to Isshiki Otsutsuki, the former being sealed away in the aftermath. Boro meets his end when he is demolished by a Rasengan delivered by a Momoshiki-possessed Boruto. The destruction of Boro's core before his death had mutated him to the point where Momoshiki had to step in to save Boruto from being killed by the rampaging Boro.
In the anime specifically, Boro's cult was investigated after his death, gleaning important evidence that proved the crimes he enacted to manipulate people into joining his cult. The base containing Boro's cult would be wiped out later by Delta, who was still working as an Inner of Kara before Amado later defected to the Hidden Leaf Village and recreated Delta as a "powerful ally to Konoha."

Episode of Death: | Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 218 "Partner" |
JP Voice: | Kenjiro Tsuda |
EN Voice: | Keith Silverstein |
After proving to be one of the most powerful foes seen in the Naruto franchise yet, Isshiki was brought to the brink of defeat after a laborious effort from Naruto, Sasuke, Kawai and Boruto. While Naruto's Baryon Mode did significant damage, it wasn't enough to finish the fight and allowed Isshiki a chance to attempt a reincarnation through Kawaki's body. After believing his efforts to be a success, the Kawaki he planted a Karma upon was revealed to be a shadow clone.
By the time this ruse is made known, it is too late for Isshiki to do anything else to save himself, allowing Kawaki to deliver the final strike, rendering Isshiki's form a mound of ash and dust. Much like with Momoshiki, Isshiki's spirit was able to act after the destruction of his body. As opposed to seeking out a vessel, however, Isshiki instead decided to pass his will along to Code, who became the last remaining inner of Kara.
3 Kurama Lost His First Life, Letting Naruto Go All-Out

First Anime Appearance: | Naruto Episode 1 "Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!" |
Episode of Death: | Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 218 "Partner" |

When the situation was looking grim against Isshiki Otsutsuki, Kurama suggested to Naruto that they should use the lifespan-draining Baryon Mode to defeat the mighty Otsutsuki Clan member. Naruto agreed under the assumption that both of their lives were on the line, only for Kurama to reveal after that only his lifespan was consumed between the two to keep Baryon Mode active. Thankfully, this effect also took its toll on Isshiki, who was heavily subjected to Baryon Mode's chakra during Naruto's assault using it.
While fading away after the use of Baryon Mode was believed to be the ultimate death of the Kurama for some time, it has since been revealed in the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga that a younger incarnation of Kurama has been reborn within Himawari. Himawari has also already been stated to have better compatibility with the nine-tailed beast than her father, Naruto. Although Kurama has now returned, his initial death remains a monumental moment in the Naruto universe.

10 Times Boruto Broke Our Hearts
While the Naruto franchise ended by promising peace, the Boruto era is still filled with crime, wars, abuse and so many other heartbreaking elements.
Kagura is a longtime friend of Boruto and his team who took on the role of prison warden for his village of Kiri, seeing it as a genuine opportunity to help people reform. After Kagura had previously helped Boruto to defeat Seiren, who died of her injuries as a result, Funamushi sought revenge on Kagura. Funamushi achieved his goals during an assault on a small village near Kiragakure, taking a weakened Kagura hostage before fatally stabbing him through the back as payback for Seiren.
Kagura was buried underneath the tree he spent his childhood training under, eventually sharing this resting place with his teammate Hebiichigo after her passing. His death also spurred the villagers near Kiragakure he died defending to support the shinobi in any way they could, willing to starve themselves to feed their shinobi defenders if that's what it took.

JP Voice: | Yuko Sanpei, Kokoro Kikuchi (The Last: Naruto the Movie) |

Of most recent note, Boruto himself has recovered from an encounter with death after Kawaki punches a hole straight through Boruto. Boruto allowed this to happen, accepting Kawaki's conviction to get rid of Momoshiki for good, even at the expense of Boruto's life. As it turns out, Kawaki does succeed in a sense, as Momoshiki winds up rewriting the last 18% of compressed data in Boruto's Karma with Boruto's data to revive the protagonist, succeeding in preventing Momoshiki's resurrection for good.
Despite this, Momoshiki warns that Boruto is now an Otsuktsuki that Code can use as a sacrifice to the ten-tailed beast and that Boruto was only revived because his death would lead to Momoshiki's soul being erased. Additionally, after questioning by Boruto, Momoshiki explains that these warnings are not related to the foreboding fortune relayed to Boruto when they first connected after Momoshiki's death, which would instead come to pass after Boruto moved on from his death.
