What hardware finishes are timeless? ›

Chrome, polished nickel, and unlacquered brass are all timeless and elegant finishes that work with nearly every interior design style.

Timeless Metal Finishes.

Chrome and polished nickel are classic choices that stand the test of time. Their reflective qualities bring brightness and a sense of cleanliness, ideal for kitchen and bathroom fixtures.

Oil rubbed bronze lends a soft, almost time-worn appearance to rooms since it's supposed to replicate an earlier era hardware that is well worn yet timeless. As a point of contrast, oil rubbed bronze fixtures can be used as statement pieces to add interest to an otherwise mild color palette.

Avoid mixing sheens within the same finish (for example, Polished Nickel and Brushed Nickel). Instead, opt for at least two contrasting finishes in different sheens, like Oil-Rubbed Bronze with Lacquered Brass or Polished Chrome. Take note of undertones: warm versus cool.

Finishes like polished chrome and brushed silver are relatively inexpensive while still versatile enough for a range of bathroom styles. Oil-rubbed bronze, brushed nickel and brass fixtures are typically more expensive but come with the added benefit of high durability.

Even with recent design trends like farmhouse or modern sophistication where black and gold-colored hardware trended, satin nickel still found a home. Over the years, we have found that satin nickel knobs and pulls remain relevant in current design trends, making them one of our most popular finishes.

Does door hardware have to match? Door handles, fixtures and fittings, and other hardware don't have to match exactly, but they should blend together to make a harmonious space. If you want a cohesive aesthetic, select hardware that's a similar colour to the finish on your fixtures and appliances.

The quick answer is no, they don't, but they should complement each other and blend with the rest of the house. For instance, brushed nickel hardware in a kitchen with chrome lights doesn't work because the finishes look too similar, and they are different styles (traditional vs. contemporary).

Perhaps the most traditional of finishes, polished brass is a longstanding classic. This warm golden finish has a highly reflective surface. When purchasing polished brass, be sure to find out if it is lacquered or not. Unlacquered brass will change in color significantly over time.

Opting for hardwood in neutral tones like oak, maple, or walnut guarantees a long-lasting design appeal.

In contrast, polished chrome and brass—both polished and satin—finishes are popular in more traditional kitchen layouts. Three finishes are expected to dominate door hardware in 2024. Those finishes include vintage bronze, matte black, and satin brass.
