Tile is an integral part of many kitchen designs, not only for its durability and functionality, but for its versatile design applications too. Increasingly, homeowners are using tile to make a statement in their kitchens, whether it's on the backsplash, flooring, or countertops.

We spoke to top interior designers to find out what kitchen tile trends we can expect to see in 2024. Here are the seven tile trends you’ll want to try in your kitchen this year, according to the pros.

Terrazzo Tile

Terrazzo is a versatile tile material that has been rising in popularity for both kitchens and bathrooms. Cathleen Gruver, an interior designer with the North Virginia-based firm Gruver Cooley, predicts that terrazzo tile will be big in 2024.
One of the best parts of terrazzo, according to Gruver, is that it’s available in a variety of different color options, shapes, and sizes, so you can easily embrace this trend regardless of your design aesthetic.

Statement Slab Backsplashes

Featuring large statement slabs instead of traditional tile has been on the rise for the past year now and designers don’t expect this trend will go anywhere in 2024.
“I think not using tile is a trend as well, just using stone slab material as the backsplash for a more contemporary and clean look,” says Gruver.
If you can afford to go all out, large slab backsplashes are a luxe choice you definitely won’t regret.

Square Tiles

Subway tiles are a classic, but Rosanna Bassford, founder and principal designer at San Francisco-based design and build firm Memmo Interiors, says that this year square tiles are set to be the next big thing.
“The latest shape you’ll see cropping up everywhere are square-shaped tiles on the walls as accents and backsplashes, on the floors, and yes, even on the countertops,” she says.

Terracotta Tiles

Terracotta tiles are having a moment and that’s not set to change in 2024, according to Nureed Saeed, owner and creative director of Nu Interiors.
“Real terracotta in varying patterns and shapes are going to be the 'new' concrete field tiles in my opinion," she says. "Organic and natural, they patina and get richer over time…These tiles just get better with age."

Playful Linear Patterns

Another trend that Saeed expects will be big in 2024 is the use of tiles featuring playful linear lines and patterns.
“These are not your grandmother's pinstripes we are talking about, think bold linear patterns that take you on a journey, not just in a straight line," Saeed says.
Floors and backsplashes are where we’re most likely to see these fun and bold tile patterns play out.

Textural and 3D Tiles

Texture is in this year and that applies to tile too, according to Christine Zippert, founder and principal designer of Los Angeles-based design firm CC Zippert.
“It started with reeded wood paneling but has moved into other spaces," she says. "We just put a reeded porcelain tile into a kitchen that added dimension and texture in an unexpected place."
This type of textural tile will be most popular for walls and backsplashes but don’t discount the floors too. Floor tiles with subtle texture variations are a great way to add some earthy dimension to any space.

Colored Glass Backsplashes

Lastly, designers predict that colorful glass tile backsplashes will be popular in 2024.
“Bright-colored glass backsplashes have always been a part of our designs," says Seth Ballard, principal designer at Ballard + Mensua Architecture in Washington, DC."While not for everyone, some people love a splash of color…I feel like there is a trend towards a little more flair and color in kitchens."
Glass tile is versatile and available in numerous different colors, shapes, and styles which makes it a popular option for those looking for something new and a little different.
