Who else has the Winter Blues? I don’t know if it’s all the sickness that I am hearing about from my friend’s on Facebook, the gray-ness of the cold days we’re having here in East Tennessee, or the fact that we’re stuck inside unless we want to put on 4 layers of clothes… and no snow! If it’s going to be cold, it could at least snow!

But enough complaining about the cold and let me focus because today I’m sharing how I deal with it and my 5 favorite DIY essentials oils recipes that help our family make it through the winter… moisturized and healthy!

Foaming Hand Soap

Sickness is running rampant in our town and I’ve been preaching hand washing to my girls as much as possible these past few weeks. One of my favorite DIY essentials oils recipes is actually for making my own homemade foaming hand soap!

I prefer foaming hand soap, especially for Sophia and Moreaya, because it’s so much less messy than regular hand soap. I don’t find gobs of it in the sink every morning.

To make your foaming hand soap you’ll need just a few ingredients. I simply reuse bottles that we already had, but you can also purchase foaming bottles on Amazon for fairly cheap if you don’t already have some.

Shower Disks

Whether you have trouble focusing in the Winter because you’d rather stay snuggled in your warm bed [my hand is raised high!] or you’re trying to keep all those germs at bay, one fun way to make warm showers even more relaxing [or invigorating] is by making your own essential oils shower disks.

If you thought the foaming hand soap was easy to make, wait until you see how easy these are! In fact, if you love essential oils, you probably have everything you need at home already to make them! All you need is baking soda, water, a silicone baking mat like this one, and your oils of choice!

There are a couple variations of these shower disks – one being that you can bake them for them to set quickly so you can use them faster or freeze them. I choose to freeze mine so I add in my essential oils during the mixing process.

First, mix 1 cup baking soda with 1/3 cup water to make a thick paste. I add in about 20 drops of my favorite essential oils. The NOW® Wellness Essential Oil blends are perfect for these! Then pop them in your freezer overnight and pop out a disk every time you’re ready to take a shower!

Note: These will melt if you do the freezer method when you take them out for a long period of time. If you want to make and store them in your bathroom, be sure to use the baking method that NOW® Wellness shares here.

Hand Cream

I know that everything gets dry in the winter, but my hands do especially. Although I have noticed that my DIY foaming hand soap is more nourishing than store bought soap, I still have dry hands, cuticles and feet!

A nourishing hand cream is a must for winter and this one is my favorite personal recipe and I love to lather it on my feet and put on a pair of fuzzy socks at bedtime!

In a double boiler, melt the shea butter and coconut oil. Once melted, remove from heat and add the organic almond oil. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Once at room temperature, stir in your choice of essential oil and put your mixture in the freezer for about 15 minutes or until the oils start to become a solid.

Using a handheld mixer, mix until you have a cream consistency. You’ll be surprised at how fast it comes together and just how creamy it will be! Then, put your cream into small glass jars or tins that you have around the house or some like these.

Face Mask

NOW® Wellness has so many DIY beauty recipes that I’m dying to try and one that was at the top of my list was this Skin Renewal Mask. I love it so much that I’m sharing a Moroccan Red Clay selfie with you!

With just 4 ingredients [and one of those being water], this is an inexpensive but totally moisturizing face mask that is perfect for the Winter. The Rosemary and Rose Hip Seed Oils give it a beautiful fragrance and there’s just something about a relaxing face mask that makes for a great end to any cold day.

Lip Balm

Last but certainly not least, I experience dry, chapped lips in the Winter like no other time of the year. They crack, hurt, and burn and that’s not something I enjoy at all. I love a good lip balm and I love making my own lip balms even more. This is a fun DIY to get the kids involved in and a perfect Winter day craft activity.

We’re sticking with an easy theme [like I pretty much do with everything in life] and very few ingredients. If you don’t already have beeswax at home, you’ll need to order a bag from Amazon and while you’re at it, pick up these adorable containers that are the perfect lip balm size.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 Tbsp Beeswax Pellets
  • 2 Tbsp NOW® Wellness Organic Coconut Oil
  • 5-8 drops of your favorite Essential Oil [Peppermint, Lavender, and Lemon are my go-to’s!]

Melt your beeswax and coconut oil together. I melted mine in a makeshift double boiler – I boiled a bowl of water in the microwave then placed them in a smaller bowl down in the hot water. Then add in your essential oils. You’ll be surprised at how fast the lip balm will solidify after being poured into your small containers! The organic coconut oil is so moisturizing for your lips all Winter long!
