10 Easy Crockpot Recipes and Tips

  • Unless the recipe states otherwise, always cook with the lid on your crockpot. It is best not to open the lid while cooking.
  • Many recipes that you cook in the oven or on top of the stove can be adapted to the crockpot. If it takes 2-4 hours to cook in the oven or on the stove top then it will take about 4-6 hours on high or 8-10 hours on low in the crockpot.
  • If you need to reduce the liquid, take the lid off for the last half hour of cooking. You could also make a mix of 2 teaspoons cornstarch with some of the liquid from the dish and stir it into the rest. Then allow it to cook and thicken.
  • If you find yourself going out to eat a lot because you hate the clean up, then try using crockpot liners. It is much less expensive to use them than to eat out. Liners are especially good to use when you have company and during the holidays.
  • To make crockpot dishes even easier and faster keep a supply of ingredients like cooked hamburger, sausage, bacon or ham in the freezer. Then you won’t have to dirty a skillet or take the time to cook things like hamburger before you toss them into the crockpot.
  • Normally you should fill your crockpot about 3/4 full, especially if you are cooking soups and stews. Add the ingredients and then add liquid to fill it to 3/4 full.
  • If you have a large crockpot and a smaller recipe, simply put the recipe ingredients in an oven proof dish (like Pyrex) and set it down inside your crockpot. Then cover and cook.

Delicious Slow Cooked Roast

1 beef roast, 3-5 lbs.
1 onion, sliced
1 can cream of mushroom soup (omit for GF and sprinkle with seasoned salt)
carrots and potatoes, diced (optional)

Place roast in crockpot. Pour cream of mushroom soup and onion on top. Cover. Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8-10 hours. Add carrots and potatoes 2 hours before dinner.

*This recipe is an excellent way to prepare inexpensive roasts. This slow cooked roast recipe makes them so tender they fall off the bone and are almost impossible to lift out of the pan. Since it is so tender that no meat is left on the bone, you get more for your money. Serves 4.

Crockpot Bread Recipe

Submitted by Liz A.

I use my Automatic Bread Machine to make a batch of dough, then bake it in the 3-4 qt. Slow Cooker.

1 cup + 2 Tbsp.water (or more if necessary)
1/4 cup sugar, honey or sweetener of choice
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp.butter
1/2 cup shelled sunflower seeds, roasted & salted
1 cup rolled oats
2 Tbsp.non-fat dry milk powder (optional)
2 1/2 cups bread flour
2 1/2 tsp. instant yeast

Place ingredients in pan according to ABM instructions. Run on Dough Cycle. Place a piece of Parchment Paper in the bottom and slightly up the sides of your Slow Cooker.

When the dough cycle is complete, shape into a large ball and place on the paper. Place a single layer dish towel across the top of the cooker (above the dough) to absorb excess moisture, then top with the lid. Cook on HIGH at least 1 hour, then check for doneness.

I’m at 6300 ft above Sea Level, and a loaf this size takes 1 hour, 15 minutes. The top will be pale and may shrink back a small bit after cooked. At the end of cooking, turn it off but leave it in the cooker 15 minutes. Then remove and cool on a wire rack. The crust closest to the heating element will be darker and thicker — changing in color and thickness the further from it. Something for everyone!

Slow Cooker Apple Dip

2-12 ounce cans condensed milk
6-4 ounce canning jars with lids

Open the cans of condensed milk and pour them evenly into the jars. One jar will fill three 4 ounce canning jars perfectly. Leave a little room for expansion.

Put the jars into the crock of your slow cooker. Add water to cover the jars by at least an inch.
Cook on low for 10 hours, or until the caramel is the color you want it to be. Remove the jars, carefully, and let cool completely before opening. Serve with sliced apples.

FAQs

Do you need liquid in a slow cooker for chicken? ›

Chicken stock, low-sodium chicken broth, or water: I prefer chicken stock or low-sodium chicken broth if I have it on hand because it adds a little more flavor, but water works equally well. Adding some liquid to the slow cooker is an essential step, and ensures that the chicken is tender and juicy.

Does meat need to be submerged in a slow cooker? ›

To keep a pot roast from drying out, your slow cooker needs liquid to create a moist environment, and that can include meat or vegetable stock, wine or water. This doesn't mean the meat should be submerged; a cup or two of liquid will be enough, since the cooker is covered and liquids stay trapped inside.

What is the secret to slow cooking meat? ›

Avoid overcrowding: For the best results, fill a slow cooker between one-half and two-thirds full. Go ahead and cook big roasts and whole chickens; just make sure you use a large crock and that the lid fits snugly on top. Trim fat: For silky sauces and gravies, take a minute or two and cut the excess fat from the meat.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Is it OK to put raw chicken in slow cooker? ›

Yes, you can put raw chicken in a slow cooker! Slow cookers and Crock-Pots are designed to cook raw meats. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created from the tightly covered container destroys bacteria, making slow cooking safe. You can put frozen chicken in a slow cooker, too!

What happens if you don't put liquid in a slow cooker? ›

Not adding enough liquid can lead to burning.

"It's important to add enough liquid to ensure the bottom of your dish doesn't burn."

Do potatoes go on top or bottom of meat in a crockpot? ›

Slow cooker recipes have (obviously) long cook times, and it's the meat—not the carrots—that benefit from it. By placing the protein at the bottom (closest to the heating element), and vegetables at the top, you can keep your plant parts a little more toothsome, while ensuring your meat is fall-apart tender.

What cannot be cooked in a slow cooker? ›

Why are my potatoes still hard in the crockpot? ›

Insufficient Liquid: If there wasn't enough liquid in the crockpot, it could have caused uneven cooking. Potatoes need to be fully submerged in liquid to cook evenly. Old Potatoes: Very old or stored potatoes can become starchy and may not soften as well during cooking. It's best to use fresh, firm potatoes.

Are you supposed to lock the lid on a slow cooker? ›

"Those latches are only designed to carry-out food somewhere to avoid spillage." If there is a locking lid feature on your glass lid, that is only to prevent spills when you're toting the Crockpot to your potluck, not for when you're cooking.

What vegetables are good in a slow cooker? ›

The best vegetables for a slow cooker are sturdier veggies like celery, carrots, tomatoes, onions, peppers and green beans, like we used in this recipe. Also, cauliflower, corn, beets, potatoes (both Russet and sweet), mushrooms and squash are all great contenders, too.

Should you stir a slow cooker? ›

Resist the urge. Every time you lift the lid, heat escapes and adds up to 30 minutes longer to your cook time. Slow cookers are made so you don't have to stir with the low cooking temperature, so relax. Leave it.

What is the best meat to cook in a slow cooker? ›

Can I leave food in a slow cooker overnight off? ›

Most appliances will automatically shut off after 20 or so hours on this setting, but you shouldn't leave food in a slow cooker for an extended length of time. The general rule of thumb is that 2-4 hours is the maximum length of time you can leave food in a slow cooker on warm.

What happens if you slow cook on high instead of low? ›

Let's say you want to slow cook a pork roast recipe that calls for 8 hours on Low, but you need it done in much less than 8 hours. Switching to High for the sake of time savings can leave you with a roast that's dried out or even burned on the exterior, but undercooked and not at a food-safe temperature in the center.

Is it safe to cook chicken in a slow cooker without liquid? ›

I had no idea you could cook a whole chicken in a slow cooker without adding any liquid. I decided to try it out, and while I have to tell you it will not beat a oven roast chicken with crispy skin, it is a super simple and amazing way to cook a chicken so you have dinner 75% ready when you get home.

Can you cook in a slow cooker without liquid? ›

Slow cookers have tight-fitting lids, which means they create rather than evaporate liquid in the cooking. A slow cooker does not need any liquid added at the beginning of the cooking process, because it will generate steam, which will become liquid in the bowl.

Does the chicken have to be covered in water in slow cooker? ›

You don't really need much. A couple inches of broth or water on the bottom should be fine. Mostly, it is just to keep the meat from sticking. Even though I add water and/or chicken/beef broth, according to a recipe for a slow cooker, the meat still turns out dry.

How do you keep chicken from drying out in a slow cooker? ›

Chicken breasts are a lean cut and the key to slow cooking them without drying them out involves the right amount of moisture. Add just enough liquid to come 1cm up the side of the bowl. Cover and cook on High for 2 ½-4 hours or on Low for 4-6 hours.
